Bristol Summer School on Probabilistic Techniques in Computer Science

The purpose of this school is to provide a graduate-level introduction
to probabilistic methods relevant to modern theoretical computer science, and
to the mathematics underlying these methods. The school is primarily
aimed at early career researchers, postdocs and research students in
mathematics or computer science, although applicants from other
backgrounds are welcomed.
A range of leading international speakers will give a series of short
courses. The programme includes topics on data streaming, random
graphs and stochastic processes, communication complexity, auction
theory for sponsored search, approximation algorithms and
concentration of measure.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
The academic programme of the summer school is planned to run for 5 full
days, from the 7th to the 11th of July 2008. We expect that most
attendees will arrive on Sunday the 6th and leave on Friday the 11th.
The majority of the programme will consist of lectures on the following
topics from our invited speakers:
* Data stream algorithms
(Graham Cormode, AT&T Labs)
* Random graphs and stochastic processes
(Ayalvadi Ganesh, Mathematics Department, University of Bristol)
* Communication complexity
(Eyal Kushilevitz, Technion, Israel)
* Auction theory for sponsored search
(S. Muthu Muthukrishnan, Google New York)
* Approximation algorithms
(Joseph Naor, Technion, Israel)
* Concentration of measure
(Andreas Winter, Mathematics Department, University of Bristol)
There will be a midweek poster session, at which attendees are
encouraged to present their work.
REGISTRATION

The normal registration fee is 50GBP for academic/student attendees.
This fee includes summer school sessions, social activities, lunch
Monday-Friday, all course materials, and B&B accommodation.
Thanks to the generous support of the Heilbronn Institute, we can
further subsidise the registration and travel costs of postdoctoral or
early career mathematicians located in the UK for a number of attendees.
Registration closes on 14 March 2008. We advise attendees to register
well in advance, as places are limited.
LOCAL INFORMATION
Bristol is a multicultural city of balloons and kites, clubs and DJs,
festivals and carnivals, architecture and park land, business and new
technology, theatres and museums, artists and animators, music and film.
It has been officially designated a 'Centre of Culture' and a 'Science
City' by the Government.
Bristol also has good transport links to the rest of the UK and its own
international airport.
