TAPAS - Tel Aviv Ph.D. Annual Symposium

Hi all,
This message is mainly addressed to the CS Ph.D. students.

For a while now, a couple of students of the CS school have been trying to organize an event that will bring together all of the CS Ph.D. students. A way for us to get to know eachother both acadmically and personally. With our head of school, it's been suggested to hold this event right before the European Symposium on Algorithms (ESA) which will take place in Eilat this coming October. Ph.D. students from abroad who intend on attending ESA will also be invited to this conference\get together.

This event will be held in the form of a mini-conference, where some Ph.D. students will presents their work in short talks, followed by some social event.

Any CS Ph.D. student who is interested to attend this event can join a Google group that was set up for this purpose.

Strike Announcemenet

The Student Union has voted to go along with the National student body decision, and to be on strike starting Tuesday, April 10th.
An important decision that was also taken is the way the strike will be enforced (or more precisely not enforced). After many conflicts at the gates during the last strike, it has been agreed that the gates will not be closed and no activists will block them. However, there will be teams patrolling the campus making sure no class is taking place.

More info about the strike

Strike (again...)

The student union has decided to go on strike this coming Wednesday, March 28th.
To all junior academic staff and Milgaim, please make sure to have your Junior academic staff ID or some sort of letter from your advisor to be able to enter the campus. To all the rest, I sure hope we'll have great weather on Wednesday and you can have fun at the beach... :-)

Students' strike Wed. Jan 3rd

As you may or may have not heard, the student union plans a strike tomorrow, Wed. Jan 3rd, and asks all students to not attend classes. This obviously affects us all. As students, each of us should consider if she\he thinks the cause is worthwhile and decide if to attend class or not based on his beliefs. To all of us that are also teaching assistants, the strike does not affect us and we are expected to give the lessons as usual. This has been confirmed by The Junior Faculty Association which should send an email shortly.

Suggestions

This post is a "stub" for you to reply and add your good suggestions for things to bring up in my first meeting with the heads of the schools.
Here are a couple I already got:

1. Have a Nespresso coffee machine (with capsules). I already asked for a price quote from the supplier, and if relevant, will post an update (thanks to Ricky Rosen for the idea).

2. There a lot of computer scrap and crap lying around the open-space (and I don't know what's the situation in the rest of the labs - but I assume it's better). If you have some parts (monitors, keyboards, mice, and some other stuff) that can be gotten ridden of, mark them, and I will try to organize with the system team to collect it all and move it to their storeroom.

Now it's you're turn - reply to this post with some more ideas.

Election final tally

A lot of people asked me for the final tally of votes, so here are the official numbers:
Sonny Ben-Shimon - 30 votes
Daniel Deutch - 19 votes
Hadas Shachar - 14 votes
